This time Diablo will really destroy the Sanctuary, again, probably!
Blizzard had a heck of an Opening Ceremony at their BlizzCon event this weekend. After having been away from hosting the fan & developer expo for three years, the studio is back this year and let it be known that one of their legendary IPs is already coming back for more.
Diablo V! That’s a 5! That’s the fifth Diablo game, and the first announced since 2023’s Diablo IV launched. If it seems like a fast turnaround, that’s because it is. Diablo III launched in 2012 and IV in 2023, with an 11 year gap. Diablo V is heading for launch in Spring 2029, just 6 years after IV. That’s the second fastest release timing since the original and its sequel, 4 years apart. Part of this may be just to move past Diablo IV and trod new territory, and part of it may be the recent Xbox push to bring its biggest IP back a lot faster.
Whatever the case, we do have a few details about it.
Diablo V will take place in a world where the titular Evil has destroyed Sanctuary, so whatever is left of the world could be vastly different than what fans are used to.
And thanks to a panel later in the evening we discovered that the main playable character will be the Heir to Westmarch, linked to Diablo in a way that makes the beast, uh, uncomfortable? Something like that. Blizzard also revealed some of the classes that we’ll see, like the Demon Hunter, Monk, and the all-new Plague Knight class.
