It’s been a good couple of weeks for upcoming video game adaptations
Don’t look now but video game adaptations in film and TV (or streaming now, I guess?) have been very, VERY good as of late. Heck, even the latest Super Mario and Mortal Kombat films were enjoyable in their own ways.
Well, there’s more where that came from! A slew of new announcements recently and updated trailers have been revealed, and we’re excited to get some more viewing in!
The new Street Fighter movie is hitting theaters on October 16 and each trailer continues to make it look more and more ridiculous, but in a silly fun way? Being accurate down to hair styles is apparently a defining factor of the film.
Announced during the latest Pokemon Championships weekend, Pokemon: Wild Card is a brand new animated film about the pocket monsters. The catch, though, (get it, CATCH?!) is that it’s based on the CARD game and not just about catching monsters. It certainly angles towards a bit more of a serious-ish anime take on the IP. It’s scheduled for release in 2027.
But wait, there’s MORE Pokemon on the way. We already knew the company was working with Aardman to create a new stop-motion series that was likely going to land on Netflix. Things have changed, however, and the Pokemon Company have now signed a deal to bring the new series to Disney+ instead. Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu is being told from the vantage point of the Pokémon themselves instead of the typical trainers and humans, so expect a lot of new ideas — and plenty of cuteness — when it arrives in 2027. Also of note, the original Pokemon animated series is also now streaming on Disney+.
Speaking of streaming shows, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II premieres October 20 on Netflix. The animated series picks up with new characters, new plots, and a lot of dark themes all set in our near cyber future and the world of the game. And it looks cool as heck.
And finally, while this isn’t exactly game related the teams at Marvel and LEGO have created a version of the Doomsday trailer in the style of the toys. And now I want the next LEGO Marvel Super Heroes game to be exactly like this.
