Hello, Indie! KingOfShibuya’s Baito Fight!!

Baito Fight!! is a micro life sim with big themes

I love to check out the work that independent developers are doing because they often have fewer self constraints when it comes to being creative, innovative, or just having fun. And one of the best ways to find out what they’re working on is to ask them directly! With Hello, Indie! I’ll be popping in to say “Hello!” to the devs and ask about their latest projects.

Each mini-interview is a series of the same-ish questions that I hope bring a little insight into the developer, their project, and what we can look forward to.

I had the chance to chat with the folk behind Baito Fight!!: Part-time Devil Hunter, a life sim that mixes day-to-day living with the extermination of demons that have invaded our apartment complex — all while using a classic JRPG format. I initially played it on the Playdate, and since then it’s continued development and hopped over to other platforms, too.

Hello, KingOfShibuya!

Who are you, and where are you located?

I go by 鶴橋セブンbut you can call me Seven. I’m currently located in Osaka, though I’m originally from Detroit. Other collaborators are in Osaka, Tokyo, Australia, and theres even one in the Carolinas.

What’s the name of your game?

Our latest game is called (in English) Baito Fight!!: Part-time Devil Hunter.

If you could summarize your game in a 140-character tweet, how would you describe it?

You play it daily, talking to neighbor NPCs in a Japanese apartment complex, engaging in baseball-themed RPG battles, and every day you play it the story and battle content changes.

What are you trying to achieve with your game?

I wanted to make a JRPG that had a good amount of content in it, but didn’t feel like it was too big, and so most days you can play as little as 15 minutes and still get to most of the content. Also I really wanted to make a new battle system that was original and not like other games. So it’s themed after baseball. There’s a lot of Animal Crossing and Majora’s Mask influence. Some Dragon Quest 1 too.

How long have you been working on this project, what platforms are you aiming for, and do you have a release timeframe?

This game was worked on and off for a little under 2 years while we all worked on other projects. It originally released on Playdate summer 2024, but it has just very recently released on Windows, macOS, and Linux this August! You can buy it on your game store of choice, and play it in English, Japanese, or Korean.
